Abstract
This study was undertaken to determine if Carthami semen herb-acupuncture(HBA) has a protective effect against Hg-induced acute renal failure in rabbits. Rabbits received subcutaneous injection of 10§·/§¸ HgCl©ü. In experiments for HBA effect, rabbits received each 0.5 §¢ of Carthami semen herb extraction in both side of - for 7 days before and 2 days after treatment of HgCl©ü. Hg treatment induced a decrease in urine volume and glomerular filtration rate, which were accompanied by an increase in fractional excretion of Na^(+) and K^(+) and a decrease in urine osmolality, These results show that Hg resulted in oliguric acute renal failure. HBA significantly increased the decrease in urine flow, glomerular filtration rate and urine osmolality. BHA also decreased the increased fractional excretion of Na^(+) although nonsignificant. However, the impairment of K^(+) reabsorption and organic anion transport, and the decreased GSH content induced by HgCl©ü were not altered by HBA. These results indicate that HBA ameliorates partly Hg-induced acuted renal failure, although the precise mechanisms of HBA protection remain to be determined.
